Well Flow Testing is done to determine what the capacity of the well is over a sustained period. Usually, a Residential Well is Flow Tested for 4 hours. This will determine the capacity of the well and its suitability for use as a water supply for a household.

The information gathered during the Flow Test includes data such as Static Level, Drawdown, Pump Size, Casing Size, Well Depth and Pump Depth.

Usually, Flow Tests are done when a property is sold and a lender or buyer want to confirm that there is an adequate water source to sustain reasonable living conditions. A good well is an asset of the property and if an investment is to be made, a determination of adequate water supply is done to justify the investment.

Typically, an adequate well would be one that supplies at least 5 GPM or more (Lenders want at least 5 GPM for 4 hours). A good well will be in the range of 10 to 15 GPM, with outstanding wells being in the 20 to 30 GPM range. A 5 GPM well can supply 1200 gallons for use during the 4 hour period. Since a rule of thumb is that water consumption is about 100 gallons per person per day, then a 4 person family would only use 400 gallons per day of household use. This means interior useage, NOT outside use for irrigation etc. Irrigation and outside uses consume water in bulk and can rapidly deplete a 5 GPM well. A typical Rainbird sprinkler will use 4 GPM. If it is left on for a long period, it can run the well dry watering that thirsty garden in the summertime.

For this reason, a purchaser of a property should ALWAYS have a well flow test done to determine the adequacy of the well. The Flow Test should be done by a competent firm with experience and expertise in performing the test so that the results can give the parties involved a good idea if there is enough water to live on.
