Arsenic is found in well waters in areas near Eugene, to the South and East. Creswell, Saginaw and Cottage Grove all have areas where Arsenic can be found. Moderate amounts are found in the Marcola and Deerhorn areas. It is also found just South of Eugene out Lorane Highway. Arsenic is a semi-metallic element, and as such it accumulates in the body, and depending on the concentration and volume of water consumed, it will ultimately become toxic. It is a carcinogen (cancer causing) and is recognized by the EPA as such and therefore regulated. The current MCL or Maximum Contaminant Level (maximum allowed) is 0.05 ppm* or 50 ppb*. This level was set by the EPA on the assumption that if you drink 1 liter of water for 70 years, you will be unaffected. This level is currently under review and may be lowered (year 2001) to around 0.01 ppm* or 10 ppb* or lower due to concerns that the current level may be too high. The EPA has set a new standard for Arsenic of 0.01 mg/L (ppm)... Go to this site for the details. New Arsenic Rule Various methods may be used to remove Arsenic, but it is a difficult contaminant to filter out. Most economical methods ($1000) treat drinking water in small quantities, usually at the kitchen sink. Whole house systems are available and range from $2000 to $10,000. Office: 541-484-9776 | ||
